Project Overview
Dr. Kui Muraya, a Kenyan writer, thought leader, and gender and health systems researcher, approached me to create a centralized digital home for her expanding body of work. This project was delivered in partnership with InkGate Global, combining strategic brand positioning with technical execution to bring her vision to life. With her podcast hosted on YouTube, publications scattered across external platforms, and professional services lacking a dedicated showcase, audiences struggled to find a single destination for her expertise. The goal was to design a high-end, modern portfolio website that would seamlessly unify her bio, podcast episodes, research publications, speaking services, and contact channels, creating a cohesive, authoritative hub that reflects her 15+ years of impactful work at the intersection of gender equity, community health, and decolonial practice.
The Challenge
Before this project, Dr. Kui’s digital presence faced several critical limitations:
- Fragmented Content Ecosystem: Podcast episodes, academic articles, and professional offerings lived across disconnected platforms, creating a disjointed experience for followers, collaborators, and media.
- No Centralized Hub: Without a dedicated website, there was no single, professional destination for audiences to explore her full portfolio or understand her research focus.
- Manual Content Tracking: Updating and archiving new publications required navigating multiple external sites, with no streamlined system to categorize or sort her growing work.
- Limited Direct Engagement: Potential clients, academic institutions, and event organizers lacked a clear, professional pathway to book consultations or request speaking engagements.
These gaps diluted her brand authority and made it difficult for her audience to engage with her work holistically.
Our Solution: Addressing the Need
To unify and elevate Dr. Kui’s digital footprint, I developed a purpose-built WordPress portfolio tailored to her academic and creative brand:
- Centralized Content Architecture: Designed a unified platform housing her biography, podcast episodes, publications, services, and contact information in an intuitive, logically structured layout.
- Dynamic Publications Archive: Built a dedicated publications page with category filtering and chronological sorting, allowing visitors to explore research, articles, and media by topic or date.
- RSS Feed Sync & External Linking: Integrated automated RSS feeds to pull in her latest blog posts and linked publications directly to their original Medium articles, preserving content freshness without duplication.
- Custom Post Types & Self-Managed Dashboard: Implemented a user-friendly WordPress backend with custom post types, enabling Dr. Kui to independently add, categorize, and update publications without developer assistance.
- Appointment Booking Integration: Added a streamlined scheduling system so collaborators, media, and clients could easily book consultations or speaking engagements directly through the site.
Design Philosophy
The design prioritized intellectual clarity, cultural resonance, and accessibility:
- Refined & Scholarly Aesthetic: Clean typography, generous white space, and a grounded color palette reflect her Afro-centred, intersectional lens while maintaining academic professionalism.
- Content-First Layout: Structured to prioritize readability, with clear visual hierarchy for long-form research, podcast show notes, and service offerings.
- Mobile-Optimized & Inclusive: Ensured seamless navigation across all devices, with high-contrast text, semantic markup, and keyboard-friendly interactions for universal access.
- Brand-Aligned Storytelling: Strategic placement of photography, pull quotes, and structured sections to highlight her thought leadership and amplify African narratives.

Reflection: Insights Gained
This project highlighted the critical role of digital centralization for thought leaders and researchers. By consolidating scattered content into a cohesive, self-manageable platform, I helped Dr. Kui Muraya transform her fragmented online presence into an authoritative, easily accessible brand hub. It reinforced the value of designing for independence, equipping clients with intuitive dashboards so they can scale their content without technical bottlenecks. Additionally, integrating external platforms like Medium and YouTube while maintaining a clean, owned digital space taught me how to balance cross-platform visibility with centralized brand control, ensuring creators remain the primary architects of their narrative.
